The Modal Verb "能" (néng)

In Mandarin Chinese, the modal verb "能" (néng) is used to express ability, capability, or possibility.

Usage:

Subject + "能" (néng) + Verb

Examples:

  • 我能帮你。 (Wǒ néng bāng nǐ.) - I can help you.
  • 他们能来吗? (Tāmen néng lái ma?) - Can they come?
  • 你能做这个吗? (Nǐ néng zuò zhège ma?) - Can you do this?

Additional Notes:

  • The modal verb "能" (néng) can also indicate permission or likelihood depending on the context.
  • In some cases, "能" (néng) can be interchangeable with "会" (huì), but "能" (néng) often implies physical or mental ability, while "会" (huì) suggests learned or acquired skills.
